FjordMAX is the fjord based production technology of the future for salmon farming. The aim is to increase the utilization of the fjord systems in a sustainable way. The areas that have given Norwegian aquaculture industry international competitive advantages.
With FjordMAX's platform solution, all operations take place within an integrated unit and there will be no need for remote workboats. The plant has up to 90% collection of particulate organic waste, double barriers against escape, is impact-proof and has systems to ensure good fish welfare and minimize the risk of lice infestation. The solution will provide improved working conditions for employees and increase safety.
The technology represents a total area-efficient solution. With FjordMAX technology, we can triple production in fjord systems on a smaller area than what the industry uses today. In this way, the technology can help solve environmental challenges by establishing a greater distance between farming premises. This allows for larger infestation and bracketing zones which is one of the most important measures to address lice and disease challenges.
The technology ensures that the Norwegian natural conditions of a sheltered coastline with many fjords and good water replacement will also in the future be our foremost competitive advantage. At the same time, the technology will help solve environmental and land challenges and create the basis for sustainable growth in the Norwegian aquaculture industry.
Salaks applied in July 2017 for 9 development permits to develop FjordMAX. In December 2019, the Directorate of Fisheries finally received a commitment for 6 development permits of 780 tonnes of maximum permitted biomass, totalling 4680 tonnes. Work to realize the project is ongoing.
