We have a responsibility to produce salmon with as low an environmental footprint as possible, and we have a responsibility to ensure good fish welfare.
Through sustainable production and innovation, we in Salaks and the rest of the aquaculture industry will contribute to achieving the UN's sustainability goals. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals address the environment, the economy and social conditions. Eight of the SDGs are particularly important for us in the industry.
We need to produce more food from the sea
One of the goals is to produce more food from the sea, ensure food security and better human nutrition. We will also build jobs and provide good working conditions for our employees. Making better use of the ocean's resources by taking care of all the raw materials and reducing wastage and utilizing by-products as raw materials in fish feed is also a goal of sustainability.
We work every day to limit environmental impacts to the outside world and to produce good and safe food.
Transition to Green Energy
In recent years, we have invested in new energy solutions at sea locations. This rearrangement reduces our diesel consumption considerably. In the past, all electricity used for feeding, lighting and operation at the sites has been produced using diesel power units. This production has historically entailed a diesel consumption of up to 200,000 litres per year, per locality.
Reduces climate emissions and noise
In five out of eight locations, sea cables have now been laid and here, in a normal situation, we operate exclusively on shore power. For the remaining sites, diesel-hybrid solutions have been installed on two feed fleets and a final site is under planning for onshore power. With these measures, we significantly reduce climate emissions, while reducing noise in and around the facilities.
We are also continuously working to reduce energy consumption further through energy efficiency of operations, data collection using new systems that give us a good overview of energy consumption helps to make this possible.
We promote innovation
We have always had a low threshold for using technology in our food production. We are a driving force for the development of new technology, smarter and more sustainable use of our sea lands. At the slaughterhouse, we take care of all residual raw materials, which in turn provides more jobs and greater value creation.
